Improv class as part of health research FAQs

How will the data be collected for this study?

Here's the information from the research write up that was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB)...

How will the data be collected for this study?

Subjects will participate in an improv class with 6 sessions. The improv class will be very typical and include improv games and improvising scenes with other participants. The classes will be conducted online via zoom.

Starting a week before the classes (to establish a baseline) subjects will wear the Oura ring throughout the day. The ring will measure heart rate, movement, and body temperature. These measures will allow us to determine the level of

daily stress and quality of sleep the participants experience. We hypothesize participating in the improv classes will reduce stress and improve the quality of sleep.

Before and after class, participants will fill out a questionnaire about their current emotional state.

The purpose is to characterize how the emotional state changes (and presumably improves) as a result of the improv experience.

How will the data be stored after it is collected? Please describe how it will be secured (encrypted) and when it will ultimately be destroyed.

All data collected will be anonymized, the only exception is the video of the class which will be shared only with individuals involved with the data analysis which will include a qualitative analysis of the video. The video will be saved on an external hard drive and kept in a secure location. Participants will be informed, during the informed consent procedure, about the video recording procedure and who will have access to it. The videos will ultimately be destroyed a maximum of 2 years after their collection. The data from the ring itself, to the extent it will include any identifying information, will be anonymized shortly after collection (meaning the columns of the data that may include such information [e.g., date of birth] will be removed).

How often should I upload my Oura ring data?

Once per week. We’ll remind you after each weekly class.

How do I upload my Oura ring data?

You’ll be sent a Google Drive folder where you can upload your Oura ring data each week. Please direct any questions to mary at chooseimprove dot com.

When should I charge my Oura ring?

The best time to charge your ring is when you're sitting working at a computer, taking a shower/bath, or otherwise not being active (since it's best to wear the ring when you're active)

I have other Oura ring questions! Who should I ask?

Please check out the Oura ring support page and feel free to ask Mary (mary at chooseimprove dot com) questions as well. If neither the Oura support website or Mary can answer your questions, please contact Oura customer support.
